Cache is a round ottoman covered in bouclé fabric and raised on four angled wood legs. The lid lifts off to open a lined storage compartment, and its underside is a flat wood surface, so the same piece can serve as a footstool, a storage box or a small side table. It comes in Chalk, Ink or Blush.

  • Lift-off lid with a lined compartment underneath
  • Reversible lid: upholstered seat or flat wood top
  • Three colours: Chalk, Ink, Blush

Small rooms do not lack surfaces or seats. They lack both in the same square foot at different times of day.

This is one object that serves whatever the evening needs: feet up before dinner, a cup and a book afterwards, and everything that was on the floor stored underneath throughout.

Tokangaʻi

Vacuum the loops gently. Never pull a snagged loop; cut it off flush.

The lid is the working part

Boucle on one side and bare wood on the otherIt drops onto the rim, so it cannot jam

A shallow well and not a trunk

What fits in the cavity

It is a shallow round well and not a trunk: two or three large-format books lie flat in it with room above. So do remotes, chargers, a pack of cards, a rolled throw, knitting, or the small clutter that lives on a coffee table until visitors come.

It suits flat, low items and not bulky or upright ones such as a duvet or a laptop bag. The shallow depth is the trade-off that keeps the whole piece low and light.

Loops in preference to a flat pile

Boucle and its single weakness

The yarn is looped and not cut, so the surface shows as texture from across a room and hides creasing as flat upholstery cannot. It also does not crush where you rest your heels.

The weakness is snagging. A claw, a watch strap or a zip can pull one loop above the rest. Cut it off level with scissors and it disappears; pull it and four more come with it.

Cache used as a footstool on a jute rug in front of a low linen sofa

Low on purpose

How low it sits

It is lower than a sofa seat, which is right for resting your feet and wrong for sitting at a table. Treat it as a footstool that also takes an adult's weight, not as a soft dining chair.

The legs splay out beyond the edge of the drum, so it stands wider on the floor than it looks and stays steady when you push off it to get up.

The wood side gets more use

I bought it to put my feet on and it has been wood side up since about week two. Coffee, phone, whatever. I flip it back when someone comes round and wants to sit on it. Did not expect that to be the main appeal.

Cat found it first

Ours sleeps on it every afternoon and there is now a slightly flattened patch and two pulled loops. Trimmed them and you cannot see it. If you have claws in the house, go in knowing that.

Legs arrive off

Four wooden posts and four bolts in a bag, screwed in by hand in under five minutes. No tools needed. Worth mentioning because the listing photo shows it built and I had assumed it came that way.

Ngaahi fehuʻi ʻoku faʻa ʻeke

Is the lid fixed on?
It is loose by design, and that is what lets it be reversed. It sits down into the rim and does not clip on, so it will not blow off, though a determined toddler can still lift it.
Can a hot mug go straight on the wood?
Use a coaster. The wood is finished but not heatproof, and a heat ring is the one mark that cannot be sanded or polished away.
What is the boucle made from?
A synthetic looped yarn over foam. We claim no wool content because we cannot verify any, so treat it as a fully synthetic weave and not a natural-fibre piece.
What wood are the legs?
Solid wood, pale and straight-grained, with a clear finish. The species has not been specified to us, so we name none. The tone varies a little from piece to piece.
How pink is Blush?
It is a muted, dusty pink and not a bright one, and boucle mutes it further because the loops cast shadows of their own. It is closer to clay than to candy.
